Welcome to The Cutting Edge.  Our emphasis is on rare and collectors' stones for museums and rough-and-cut displays of minerals, with occasional traditional jewelry stones.   All stones are cut by Jay Medici, a facetor with a decade of experience cutting soft minerals and unusual stones.  For those of you who are looking for stones to put in jewelry, please consult a mineral handbook for the hardness of a stone before buying it- stones for rings should be at least a 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness and be tough, and stones for pendants should be at least 5 hardness.

An Ultratec faceting machine is used for cutting the stones, to ensure accurate angles and indexing.  The method is to use limited numbers of facets carefully placed to give a kaledoscope effect of movement instead of hundreds of tiny facets which can give a 'marble' effect to a stone.  The listing photos should provide a good view of the stones, but if a more detailed photo would be helpful, let us know.

To quantify stone quality, the following descriptions are listed :

Flawless-   no flaws or inclusions

Slightly included- small inclusions or hidden flaws not readily visible

Moderately included- visible inclusions, flaws, haze

Heavily included-  few clean areas in the stone
