About Us

Shakya Statues

Shakya Statues is a family-owned traditional business based in Patan, Nepal. Located about 5 km south of Kathmandu in the Kathmandu Valley, Patan is one of three "royal cities" in the valley (the others are Kathmandu and Bhaktapur) and is a center of Buddhist and Hindu culture. The city is considered a destination for connoisseurs of fine arts, and is world-renowned for its rich tradition of arts and handicrafts and as the birthplace of master craftsmen such as Arniko and Kuber Singh Shakya.

We offer sculptures created by nearly a hundred local artisans descended from the ancient Shakya lineage of Buddha Shakyamuni. As the traditional fine metal workers and goldsmiths of Nepal, these master craftsmen carry on a tradition that has been handed down for centuries. Our business, Shakya Statues, has been serving customers for more than four generations.

Our artisans specialize in the lost wax casting and repousse methods of metal sculpture-making, first developed in the seventh century by the Shakya, Tamrakar and Swarnakar clans. As the first artisans capable of melting and sculpting gold, these craftsmen quickly became famous throughout the Himalayas and surrounding areas, and were highly sought-after to create sacred art for the many temples and monasteries of the region. The work of these masters is world-renowned, and has attracted tourists since ancient times to sites throughout Nepal, India and Tibet.

The techniques used by our craftsmen are identical to those developed centuries ago. The ancient knowledge continues to flourish in Nepal's artistic communities, resulting in the creation of quality sacred art that can hold its own with the best of the past. Shakya Statues' artisans enjoy the reputation of being among the best metal sculpture-makers in the world today.

Each of our sculptures and ritual items is individually handcrafted and is therefore unique. The complex process of hand-sculpting metal artwork requires great skill and is and often exhausting. Several artisans must work together to create a single sculpture and the process can take more than a year for the finest pieces. The special beauty of the ancient craft is that each sculpture emerges with an individual character and feeling. And when a statue or ritual item is to be used for religious purposes, a Buddhist Lama or Guru will perform a consecration ceremony, inviting and awakening the deity within, resulting in a profoundly spiritual work of art.

Lama Thangka Art Center

Founded over two decades ago, the Lama Thangka Art Center offers paintings created by nearly a hundred local thangka artists from the region of Bhaktapur, Nepal. Located about 14 km east of Kathmandu in the Kathmandu Valley, Bhaktapur is surrounded by the Himalayan mountains and lies along the ancient trade route between India and Tibet. Known as the "City of Devotees" and "Nepal's Cultural Gem", Bhaktapur is known for its exquisite artworks and is filled with beautifully decorated palaces, temples, monuments and religious shrines dating from medieval times.

The Lama Thangka Art Center offers a selective collection of some of the finest thangka paintings being produced in the world today. Tibetan-, Newari- and Japanese-style paintings are all available, each created by artists from families who have been creating thangkas for centuries, passing the techniques down from generation to generation.

Each painting is individually designed, sketched, and hand-painted by experienced master artists who have dedicated a lifetime to learning and perfecting the ancient techniques. The creation process is extremely complex, and it can take more than a year to prepare the most intricately-detailed paintings. Each artist must possess great skill in sketching the perfect proportions of the deities, mixing paint from natural substances, and adding subtle shading effects that bring the figures to life.

According to tradition, the artist's state of mind is above all important, and he or she must undertake to paint the thangka with a pure intention and a joyful heart, maintaining a state of meditative concentration on the subject of the image. If this is done in a genuine manner, the resulting thangka is very different from an ordinary work of art and is inherently highly sacred. Upon completion, a painting destined for religious purposes will be ritually consecrated by a Buddhist Lama or Guru, thereby transforming the thangka into a living embodiment of enlightened mind.

About Antiquities Fraud

Please be aware that it is illegal for sellers in Tibet, China and Nepal to export genuine antiquities from their country of origin. Selling genuine antique items to foreigners is considered to be plundering the cultural heritage of the country and is severely punished under national and international law. Sentences for convicted "smugglers" include lengthy imprisonments and even execution.

EBay sellers based out of Tibet, China or Nepal claiming to offer genuine antiques or valuable "old" and "ancient" items are selling fakes - recently-made modern items finished to look like antiques. While these items may be appealing, don't be fooled into paying a higher price for them than they are actually worth. (Please see this article for more details about antiquities fraud on eBay.)

At Shakya Statues Trade you can always be sure of receiving the highest quality craftsmanship at fair and honest prices, direct from the master artisans who performed the work. These craftsmen carry on the tradition that made these sacred arts world famous, and their creations are as fine as any of the past.

We offer many beautiful "antiquated" items - new creations that have the charm and unique character of genuine antiques. We also offer "pristine" artworks that offer the chance of owning a traditionally-made sculpture or painting with vibrantly beautiful colors and perfect finishing. All of our items are handcrafted using the ancient techniques that have been handed down from generation to generation, by the artisans who are the true heirs to the tradition.
