MAGDON MUSIC by Trent Salter Musicians Hotline: Jack, provide us with a history of Magdon Music, and how the company got its start? Magdon Music: Magdon Music was founded in 1988 by Michael Magdon at the age of 20. Michael had the opportunity to play on a Carnival Cruise ship with the band he was playing with; so after his Junior year, he left college and opened up shop in July of 1988. "My intension was to be my own boss so I could play the drums with the band when ever I wanted to. After 20 years, I'm still playing with the same band 2-3 nights a week, but it is getting hard keeping up with all my work at the store when I miss a day or two." "I can't complain, I had a dream and it came true." The store grew at a quick pace. In 1991 the owner of the biggest store in town passed away suddenly and Michael was able to buy their remaining inventory and fixtures at an incredible price. Not only did we suddenly triple our inventory, but we hired some of their employees and we found we were running out of space in our current location. In 1993 a clothing manufacturer in town was going out of business and I was able to purchase the building which was 9,000 square feet. At about this time I meet Jack Gretz who seemed very interested in the business and was very helpful getting the new building up and running. Jack turned out to be a great friend and started selling hi end guitars at the store. Within a few years Jack became known as one of the top experts in high end guitars and is a vital asset to our success. Magdon Music continues to grow and a 3,000 square foot addition to the building will soon be underway. MH: How has the company continued to grow and expand their lines over the years? MM: After we moved to the new store we started to go after the high end market. Today Magdon Music can say that we have been a top 5 dealer for PRS the last 5 years in a row. We were the PRS Private Stock dealer of the year in 2002. With Tom Anderson guitars we buy the maximum allowed by Anderson which is 50 guitars a year. If we could get more we would buy more, These guys are simply fabulous to work with. Martin guitars are built right here in our back yard of Nazareth PA. It's great to have an acoustic guitar icon in your home town area. MH: Magdon Music has really made great strides in the higher end guitar sales over the past few years, tell us about the lines you represent, and why they have done so well for Magdon Music? MM: I think we do things a lot different from other stores. We do not participate in the high pressure sales technique that you come across in the big box stores. We try to learn the products inside and out. Why the manufacturer used this bridge, why they choose those pickups, we try to know the finish process for each company. We play test each and every guitar in the store before it goes on the wall or into inventory stock. We have the best 3 guitar guys in Northeastern PA working here. Jay Langan knows vintage 70's and 80's gear like the back of his hand. He has been playing for about 30 years. Jay has a huge collection of guitars. John Price has also been playing about 30 years and has extensive background in effects processing and amplifiers. He has owned just about every guitar that a manufacturer can produce. Jack Gretz had been a working luthier for 18 years. Jack can tell you in 30 seconds if a guitar is a good one or a tank. He has made the connection with the folks on the internet and goes to guitar shows across the country to meet and participate with the customers. We carry Tom Anderson, Paul Reed Smith, Martin, Ernie Ball Musicman, Fender Custom Shop, Gibson Historic. One thing we have stated is that we do not want you for one guitar, we want you for all of your guitars, so if we treat you with respect and we are truthful, and fair priced, we strongly feel you will be back to see us again.
MH: Magdon Music is one of Paul Reed Smith's top dealers. Tell us about your relationship with PRS and why the line continues to be so strong for Magdon Music? MM: I called PRS every day for 9 months trying to get the dealership. It had come to the point where the receptionist knew my voice and would say we still are not opening dealers. One day I was able to speak with Mike Deely who was national sales manager at the time (1995) He said PRS could not fill orders because of the heavy back log and he was sorry but he just could not open any other dealers. I kept telling him that all we wanted was a chance. A few days later I got a call and he said they were going to give us a shot. You need to stock at least 6 guitars. That day I ordered 10 PRS. We try to stock about 85-100 PRS's today. We try to keep everything current, always order a lot of the new stuff that is coming out. We treat these guitars like they are our children; We display the used PRS and try to keep a few new on the wall but in an area where you have to get a sales person to assist you. No one wants to spend money on a PRS or any guitar to find it has scratches on it, so we keep a lot of our stock in the case, inside the shipping box in our stock room. If somebody wants to try something, we can pull it from stock to demo it. This way everything stays clean. When the person decides to buy, we can set it up with their desired string gauge, and set the action the way they prefer, while they wait. Everything is done in store. The relationship has continued to grow stronger because I feel we are willing to work with them on a "team basis" instead of the "what can you do for me" basis. PRS has come to learn from us that we strongly believe in the guitars, the philosophy of the design, Paul's inspirations of the guitar, we stand behind the guitar and the build quality. We walk side by side with them as we both continue to grow together. MH: Magdon Music also excels from the educational side. With over 1100 students per month, how has offering lessons and education helped the business grow? First off just the traffic generated by that number of students will help incidental sales. Having teachers well versed in all styles with the ability to tailor teaching to each students needs makes students feel comfortable in the store itself which in turn makes them come back to purchase their instruments. Our teachers talk to their students, they don't just teach and say good-bye. Students always have questions, they want to know how a famous artist gets his or her sound. Our teachers can advise a student about each instrument and the options available for each instrument. This is not something that we require our teachers to do. They just enjoy passing the knowledge on to each student. The teachers feel a sense of accomplishment when a student does well or even when they know the student is trying their best.
MH: Magdon Music also provides a strong Pro Audio business; tell us a bit about your sales and rental programs? The sound and lighting department at Magdon's is a very busy place. They offer a complete selection of pro audio equipment from companies such as JBL, EV, Midas, Crown, QSC, T.C. Electronics and we're being known as the biggest Mackie dealership in the Northeast section of Pennsylvania. A trip to the 2nd floor at Magdon's features one of the best lighting showrooms around! Not only is the PA department always bustling with business, the department is also always on the go doing installations of sound and lighting projects. "every job is always a new adventure, we have done installations from local night clubs to stadiums and have traveled as far as Orlando Florida to install our products." stated Mike Magdon owner of Magdon Music. Magdon Music also has a live production division. "We do sound and lights for local bands both locally and throughout a four state region as well as occasional national acts that travel through the area." states Magdon. All in all the sound and lighting department is always bustling with activity. MH: What do you feel is unique about Magdon Music, and how you serve your customers? We have a staff that is comprised of knowledgeable, friendly working professional musicians, sound and lighting techs, who are familiar with day to day concerns of beginner to professional musicians. Establishing a rapport with the customer is very important. We try to tailor a customer's purchase to their needs and budget. A customer that feels good about his or her purchase is very likely to be a repeat customer. We understand that not everyone is an audiophile. If music is just a hobby or if it is your livelihood, we can suite your needs and wants. We offer services ranging from onsite repairs on a variety of equipment to band instrument rentals and sales. MH: What's in store for the future at Magdon Music, and what do you feel has contributed to your continued growth? We have plans to add on a huge addition in the back of the store. 25 x 80 and 2 floors tall. More warehouse space, Expand the PA section of the store. A full blown acoustic room. We also have a great location here in the small town of Olyphant. Interstates 81, 80, 380, 84 and route 476 are all within 20 minutes of the store, so people drive in on a weekly basis from all over the Northeast because of the easy access to the interstate system.
