We have been collectors and dealers of Rare & Early Newspapers since 1975. Timothy Hughes, our founder, is still the centerpiece of our efforts, with Guy Heilenman serving as part-owner and the manager of daily affairs. We only offer authentic originals (no reproductions). Some of the most collectible topics, titles, and categories include: the Oxford/London Gazette (dating back to 1665, British and Colonial American titles from the 1700's (including the Revolutionary War era), reports re: many of the Founding Fathers of America - Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Hamilton, etc., the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Old West era, one of the largest offerings of Harper's Weekly (including prints by Thomas Nast and Winslow Homer), and most historic events of the 20th Century - politcs, sports, inventions, disasters, triumphs, and more. “History is never more fascinating than when read from the day it was first reported.” (Tim Hughes, Founder of Rare & Early Newspapers, 1976)

Collecting Rare & Old Newspapers is perhaps the most unique, yet reasonably priced collectible available today.  Below we have highlighted the top three most popular collecting themes, based upon recent feedback from our collectible family.

Tiimothy Hughes Rare & Early Newspapers...  History's Newsstand's most popular collectible of choice continues to be "The Earliest of Newspapers".  It's hard to imagine you can actually collect original newspapers dating back to the 1600's and 1700's (and even a few from the 1500's).  The printing material from these early years of printing contained a high percentage of linen, which has enabled them to hold up much better than newspapers printed within the last 100 years or so.  These "rag" issues are perfect for establishing a serious collection.  Some of the more popular subtopics within this theme are:

    • 1600's and 1700's
    • George Washington
    • Pirates
    • Revolutionary War
    • Colonial America

Collectible newspapers with a sports-themed focus provides probably the best opportunity for collecting newspapers as a compion collectible.  It would be difficult to find a noteworthy sporting event of the last 200 years which does not have a first hand contemporary account to be found in a collectible newspaper.  Whatever form of sports memorabilia you collect, enhancing your collection with a related newspaper report is certain to add distinction to your collection.  Some of the more popular subtopics within this theme are:
    • Baseball
    • New York Yankees
    • Boxing
    • Football
    • Horse Racing
Collecting old, rare, and original newspapers printed during the American Civil War provide context for any reputable Civil War collection.  There is something about holding history in your hands...  reading the reports of battles, proclamations, war announcements... the tradgedy and emotion of it all, that sets this area of newspaper collectibility apart from nearly any other collectible to be found.  To grasp and puruse the very same issues that were cried (and cheered) over as the events actually unfolded is breathtaking.  Some of the more popular subtopics within this theme are:
    • Abraham Lincoln
    • Confederate
    • Map Issues
    • Yankee/Union

Collecting rare & old newspapers provides an almost endless opportunity for customization.  Personal collections may be amassed centered around almost any area of historical interest.  A sampling of other popular collecting themes includes:

    • World War II
    • Illustrated Issues (Harper's Weekly, Frank Leslie's, etc.)
    • Old West - Wild West
    • Outlaws and Gunfights
    • Gold Rush and Westward Expansion
    • Jewish - Judaica Themed
    • Mormon Themed
    • Financial / Stock Market
    • Native American
    • Slavery and Black Americana
    • etc.

No matter what you collect, whether it be sewing machines, baseball cards, coins, trains, entertainment memorabilia, Babe Ruth, Civil War and/or Revolutionary War  (including authentic material for reenactors), etc., old newspapers are the perfect companion collectible.
