Only DLRC offers our own rating system for quick reference of the amount of toning & eye appeal of our coins.

The degree of Toning is designated by a number between 1-10. A '1' in color represents a pure-white coin. No toning; while a theoretical '10' would be pure-black (we've never given out a 10). Most coins designated '2' will please collectors of 'white' coins.

A coin's Eye Appeal is denoted by a series of 1-5 stars. The highest rating is 5-stars (*****). A single-star has the lowest possible eye appeal; is an average, decent coin; is above-average - very nice for the grade. (5-stars) is reserved for coins with exceptional eye appeal.

This 1879 Morgan Dollar graded PCGS MS65 PL is a great example of a coin that is a 1 in color (pure white) and 5-stars (*****) for eye appeal.

This is what we are looking for at David Lawrence in a [1*****] coin.

This 1879-O Morgan Dollar graded PCGS MS65 is a great example of a coin that is a 3 in color (some toning) and 5-stars (*****) for eye appeal.

As you can see color and eye appeal are not directly related.
