Sewing Instructions

This rag quilt is sewn with a ¾” seam allowance with the seam allowance facing the right side of the quilt.  (The use of a walking foot/dual feed sewing foot will be helpful when sewing through multiple layers).

1.        Assemble 36 fabric packets as follows:  Layer together one quilt top fabric square (right side facing up) on top of two solid flannel squares (right sides facing down).

2.      Sew an “X” through each packet on right side as shown in diagram.

3.       Lay out the packets in a 6 square by 6 square arrangement alternating the patterns as desired.

4.      Using a ¾” seam allowance with the seam allowance facing the right side of the quilt, sew 6 packets together to form the first row. Repeat for remaining rows.

5.      With seams open, pin and sew all rows together.

6.      Topstitch ¾” around the entire outside edge of the quilt.  (As a design option, make a second row of stitching ¼” from the first row of stitching).

7.      Using sharp scissors (or spring-loaded rag quilting scissors) make cuts ¼” apart and almost the depth of the seam allowances on all seam allowances and edge of quilt as shown in diagram below.   Be careful not to cut through the seam.

8.      After entire quilt is clipped, take it outside and give it a good shake to release some of the excess threads and fibers.

9.      Wash the quilt in cold water on a delicate cycle and dry on low heat checking the lint trap frequently.   Take the quilt outside for another good shake to further fluff the raggy edges.
